About Upper Saddle River
This central Bergen County bedroom suburb is known for big houses, good schools, and a rural atmosphere. Going just by the name, you may think the borough is more exclusive than its neighbor Saddle River. And while Upper Saddle River can be a fancy and expensive town, the “upper” connotation merely references its northerly distance from the other borough.
Upper Saddle River is in north-central Bergen County, bordered by Montvale, Saddle River, Ramsey, Mahwah and Woodcliff Lake in New Jersey. On the New York side, it borders Chestnut Ridge and Airmont.
Known for its tree-lined streets, parks, and big houses with beautiful landscapes. Popular housing styles in the area include Hamptons cottages, Colonials and modern farmhouses primarily consisting of one-acre lots. Upper Saddle River has a rural feel, while being centrally located in the heart of north jersey. Most of the borough sits between Route 17 (to the west) and the Garden State Parkway (to the east). While the area is absent of any notable downtown business district it does have a local library, police station, fire station, ambulance corps, municipal hall, and three primary schools.
The average trip from Upper Saddle River to New York City is 25 miles in distance depending on route. New Jersey Transit train and bus service are available in several of the neighboring towns.
Other Facts
Saddle River Valley is believed to have prehistoric evidence of cave dwellers who may have lived there as far back as 7000 years ago. Native American tribes who called themselves the Lenape (original people) migrated long thereafter, finding the area unpopulated.
Once settled by the Lenape Native Americans, it was later colonized in the 18th century principally by Dutch settlers who built mills along the Saddle River.
Upper Saddle River was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1894, from portions of Hohokus Township and Orvil Township.
