About Mahwah
Mahwah is the largest municipality by geographic location in the County of Bergen. Located just 30 minutes from New York City, each one of Mahwah’s neighborhoods reveals a distinct character. For example, the Rio Vista, a private community on 466 acres of park-like meadows and rolling hills in prestigious master-planned development of luxury single-family homes. The township is also home to some private equestrian estates and the location of several large fortune five hundred companies (giving the town an attractive property tax rate). Mahwah is known as “Bergen County’s Parkland”, containing over 5,000 acres of tracts of land.
Mahwah’s location is close to the most exclusive shopping centers and the area’s most highly rated restaurants. New York City is an easy commute, by rail (Mahwah has its own train station) or car (Route 17 and the Garden State Parkway).

The name comes from the Lenni Lenape Native American Indian word, mawewi.

Ramapo Valley County Reservation
The reservation is a 3313-acre Bergen County Park popular with dog owners. Some challenging hikes and great for walking.
Campgaw Mountain Reservation
The Mountain offers an alpine escape right in your backyard. Unique activities include archery, disc golf, (cross-country) skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing in a wooded setting.
Darlington County Park
Darlington County Park is 127 acres of wooded park with a multitude of opportunities for passive and active recreation, which includes two lakes for swimming in the summer,
Camp Glen Grey
Camp Glen Gray is an overnight campground in the Ramapo Mountains by Mahwah. Open year round, the camp offers a wide selection of cabins, leantos and tent sites. While camping in the Glen, you can hike trails with scenic overlooks, fish in Lake Vreeland, or simply relax and enjoy nature.
Darlington County Golf course
This 18-hole course resides in the rolling foothills of the Ramapo Mountain range. Players challenge the tree lined fairways, water features and distinct changes in elevation.
- Middle tees – par 72 (provides a test for even the most skilled golfer)
- Champion tees – par drops to 71 (the 507-yard par 5 ninth becomes a 493-yard par 4)
Mahwah is also home to Ramapo University, which is a 4-year university, ranked #8 in U.S. News & World Report’s National Rankings of Top Public Schools, among regional universities, for 2017.
Other Facts
The Township of Mahwah is a 26.7 square mile ideal suburban community with views of the Ramapo Mountains and the Ramapo River on its northwestern border. The historic Ramapo Valley Road (Route 202) as well as State Highway Route 17 and Interstate Highway 287 cross through its boundaries. Mahwah is a natural route northward from New York City, a mere thirty miles away, has easy access to air and rail transportation.
